New Palestinian Committee to Govern Gaza Begins Work in Cairo

· 2 min read ·

A new Palestinian committee has officially begun its work, tasked with administering the Gaza Strip and leading its reconstruction after the recent war. The body, formed from an agreement between major Palestinian factions, will initially operate from Cairo, Egypt, before moving into Gaza itself [52830][51789][49980].

The committee is described as a "technocratic" government, meaning it is intended to be led by experts in governance, finance, and civil service rather than political figures [52193][50224]. Its immediate mission is to launch urgent relief efforts and restore public services, with the long-term goal of overseeing the massive task of rebuilding the devastated territory [52830][51789][51777].

"The objective is to bring smiles on the faces of Gaza’s children, women and men," said committee head Ali Shaath upon announcing the start of operations [51777]. The formation of this administrative body is a central component of a broader international plan for Gaza's future, which also includes the disarmament of militant groups and large-scale reconstruction [50182][50224][50592].

The United States has been a key proponent of the plan, with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff outlining a proposal for a temporary technocratic administration, demilitarization, and rebuilding [50224][50592]. Germany has also publicly backed the new committee [51767]. The European Union has separately emphasized the need for a reformed and strengthened Palestinian leadership as essential for lasting stability [9298].

While the committee has started its work, its full implementation is part of a proposed second phase of a ceasefire deal, and some key details regarding oversight and final approval remain unresolved [50117][52320]. The involvement of high-profile international figures, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and former U.S. advisor Jared Kushner, in a separate U.S.-supervised reconstruction group underscores the complex, internationally-backed nature of the effort [52316].
