US Treasury Secretary: US Must Defend Greenland Because Europe is "Weak"

A top US official has defended President Donald Trump's interest in purchasing Greenland, arguing European allies are too weak to defend the island. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made the comments on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday. He stated that Greenland needs American protection for its security. "Europeans project weakness on the world stage," Bessent argued. This perceived weakness, he said, is why Greenland should look to the United States for defense instead of its traditional European partners. Greenland is a vast, autonomous territory of Denmark. Its strategic location in the Arctic has growing military and economic importance. President Trump confirmed his interest in buying Greenland last week. The Danish government has called the idea "absurd" and said the island is not for sale.
