France's special envoy for Palestinian statehood, André Parant, met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty in Cairo on Monday to discuss ways to support the creation of an independent Palestinian state and counter Israeli settlement expansion and annexation attempts [1]. Both officials stressed the importance of preserving the foundations of a Palestinian state, saying this would help achieve peace and stability in the region [1].

The diplomatic push comes as international concern grows over Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during talks with Israel's president on Thursday, called for two major changes: fully opening access routes into Gaza and reversing settlement expansion in the West Bank [2]. Wang warned that two million civilians should not be "left to struggle on the brink of survival" and said the humanitarian crisis must not be allowed to spread [2].

The issue has also sparked tensions involving European diplomats. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot said his government will push for European Union sanctions against those responsible for an attack on European diplomats in the West Bank by Israeli settlers [3]. The incident adds to growing international concern over settler violence [3].

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned of a growing "crisis" in the West Bank following an attack that injured an American photojournalist [4]. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said Israel must "urgently halt criminal violence" and arrest those responsible [4].

Meanwhile, Iraq has assumed the chairmanship of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers. The OIC is a group of 57 countries that works to represent Muslim interests worldwide, and Iraq says it will highlight the Palestinian cause in its new role [5].
