Spain clears migrant beach camp after three-week crisis

Spain has begun moving migrants off a makeshift beach camp in the North African enclave of Ceuta, nearly three weeks after a mass border crossing left thousands without proper shelter.
The operation started on Thursday, 20 August, at El Trampolín beach, where migrants had been living in the open since a large-scale surge across the border from Morocco.
Authorities are relocating the migrants to temporary shelters. The move comes after weeks of criticism over the conditions at the site, where people lacked basic amenities.
The enclave, which sits on Africa’s northern coast, saw a sudden spike in arrivals in early August, overwhelming local facilities. Officials have not said how many people remain on the beach or how long the relocation will take.
