Turkey Cements Global Arms Role with $171M Asia-Pacific Deal and First Armed Robot Boat Sale
Turkey Cements Global Arms Role with $171M Asia-Pacific Deal and First Armed Robot Boat Sale Turkey is rapidly expanding its footprint as a major exporter of advanced military technology, securing a landmark $171 million defense contract and completing its first foreign sale of an armed robotic boat within days. Turkish defense electronics giant Aselsan announced a major international sales contract worth $171 million with a client in the Asia-Pacific region. The deal is for military communication systems and specialized payloads for unmanned surface vehicles, or USVs [58975]. Aselsan is a primary supplier to the Turkish armed forces and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). In a separate but related development, Turkey has made its first foreign sale of a domestically produced armed robot boat, named the ULAQ, to the Qatar Coast Guard. The vessel is an Unmanned Surface Vehicle designed to operate on water without a crew [59318]. Officials stated these sales are part of a larger export push for 2026, which will include more subsystems, weapon payloads, and communications systems for unmanned vehicles [59318]. The twin announcements underscore Turkey's growing role as a producer of sophisticated defense systems beyond its own borders. This push coincides with Turkey's recent assumption of command of a key NATO naval force. The Turkish Naval Forces took control of the NATO Amphibious Task Force and its Landing Force Command on July 1, a role it will hold for one year [54453].
