Sudan’s War Fuels World’s Largest Hunger Crisis

· 2 min read ·

The civil war in Sudan has triggered the world’s most severe hunger and displacement crisis, with millions facing starvation as aid operations near collapse. A devastating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has entered its third year, destroying the economy, crippling agriculture, and severing vital supply lines.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warns that its food stocks in Sudan will be exhausted by the end of March, just as the country enters its annual lean season when food is scarcest [51125]. Without an immediate injection of $700 million, life-saving aid deliveries will stop [51125]. This funding shortfall comes as famine has already been confirmed in parts of North Darfur and Kordofan regions [51104][19091].

Overall, more than 21 million people—nearly half the population—now face acute food insecurity [51104][4579]. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) describes the situation as “hell on earth,” noting it is the planet’s largest displacement crisis with over 10 million people forced from their homes [46480][32923]. Children in Darfur are suffering the most severe child hunger crisis globally [37885].

Humanitarian agencies report that intense fighting, bureaucratic obstacles, and direct attacks on aid workers are preventing the delivery of critical supplies [32923][46480]. The UN migration agency states that relief operations, particularly in the besieged North Darfur region, are on the brink of a complete shutdown due to a lack of funding and safe access [3473]. Towns like Dilling and Kadugli in South Kordofan are under siege, completely cut off from food and medicine [40157].

Despite the catastrophic scale of need, the international humanitarian response remains critically underfunded [17876][32923]. As the war reaches a grim milestone of 1,000 days, UN officials are demanding urgent action from the Security Council, warning that without a ceasefire and a massive increase in resources, widespread starvation is imminent [45853][32923].
