Ceasefire and Withdrawal End Aleppo Clashes Between Syrian Army and Kurdish Forces

A fragile ceasefire has taken hold in the Syrian city of Aleppo, following several days of intense fighting between government troops and Kurdish-led forces. The agreement, which includes the withdrawal of Kurdish fighters from key neighborhoods, marks a significant shift in the military landscape of Syria's largest city.

The Syrian defense ministry announced the truce early Friday, after clashes that displaced tens of thousands and resulted in numerous casualties [45441][45816]. The fighting, described as the most severe in the region in over a year, pitted the Syrian Arab Army against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the contested districts of Sheikh Maqsud and Ashrafieh [45496][46182].

Under the terms of the deal, SDF fighters agreed to withdraw completely from these Aleppo neighborhoods [47090]. The Kurdish-led forces stated the move was to "avoid further conflict and protect civilians" [47040]. In return, they were granted safe passage to move themselves, their wounded, and light weapons to areas under their control in northeastern Syria [45816][47071].

The implementation of the agreement was swift. Syrian state media showed buses transporting departing fighters, and the Syrian military declared it had finished its operations in Sheikh Maqsud [47210]. With the SDF's exit, Syrian government forces have now moved in to secure the districts, consolidating state control over parts of Aleppo that had remained outside its authority since the government recaptured the city from rebels in 2016 [45275][47040].

The SDF is a U.S.-backed military alliance that played a major role in defeating the Islamic State group and controls vast territories in northeast Syria [46675][45275]. Its relationship with the Damascus government has long been tense, and sporadic clashes have occurred even after the conclusion of major combat operations elsewhere in the country [47071][32599].

While the immediate violence has subsided, the situation in Aleppo remains tense. The ceasefire highlights the complex and fragile nature of the Syrian conflict, where multiple armed groups and foreign powers continue to exert influence over different regions [32516].
