A massive Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine has killed at least 11 people, set fire to a historic UNESCO World Heritage monastery in Kyiv, and killed four firefighters in Kharkiv in a separate double-tap strike.

The overnight assault on Monday targeted the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a centuries-old Orthodox monastery and one of Ukraine’s most sacred religious sites [172991][173043][173124]. The blaze engulfed the roof of the Dormition Cathedral, a landmark central to Ukrainian Orthodox culture and part of the UNESCO-listed Monastery of the Caves [173043][173164][173479]. Ukrainian officials reported that the strike also damaged the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Centre, which holds Ukraine’s largest costume collection and an archive of over 7,000 historical films [173043].

At least four people were killed in Kyiv, with 23 wounded, and damage was reported at 16 locations across the capital [173043][173164]. In Kharkiv, a separate Russian attack killed five people, including four rescue workers who were struck while responding to an earlier hit [173043][173467]. The Kharkiv firefighters, all members of the city’s 6th State Fire and Rescue Unit, were killed in a second strike on the same location [173467].

Ukraine’s military reported that Russia launched 70 missiles and 611 drones during the attack, with air defense intercepting 50 missiles and 582 drones [173043].
