European telecom providers are teaming up to build their own satellite communication network. The group aims to close mobile coverage gaps and counter Elon Musk's growing control over global satellite internet.
The providers will form a new consortium to develop the network. The project targets so-called "dead zones"—areas with no mobile signal—across Europe.
The move also serves as a defense against Musk's Starlink, which has rapidly expanded its satellite internet service worldwide. European providers fear depending on a single foreign operator for critical communications.
Details on cost, timeline, and participating companies have not yet been announced.
