UN Votes to Investigate Iran as Protest Death Toll Hits 5,000

The United Nations Human Rights Council has voted to establish and expand an international investigation into Iran’s deadly crackdown on nationwide protests, as an independent group reports the death toll has reached 5,000 [57476][57649].

In a special session, the council voted to create a fact-finding mission to collect and analyze evidence of alleged human rights abuses during the unrest, which began in September 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini in morality police custody [57476]. The mission’s mandate is to gather evidence for future accountability proceedings [57476].

A subsequent council vote extended the mission’s work, reinforcing the push to document violations [57649]. An independent human rights group has stated the state response to the protests has resulted in more than 5,000 fatalities, including children [57649].

The protests, sparked by Amini’s death, grew into one of the most significant challenges to Iran’s leadership in years [57476]. The new UN investigation will focus specifically on reports of excessive force by authorities and the deaths of protesters [57476].

Iran’s government has rejected the UN actions as illegitimate and politically motivated, maintaining that its security forces acted correctly against what it calls “riots” [57476][57649].
