A 19-year-old pregnant woman faced down a mutiny to save a ship in 1856.
Mary Ann Patten took command of the clipper ship when her husband, the captain, fell seriously ill. This happened during a fierce storm near Cape Horn, a dangerous region off southern Chile.
The ship's first mate challenged her authority and urged the crew to mutiny. Patten, who had taught herself navigation, convinced the crew to follow her instead.
She then successfully navigated the vessel through a field of icebergs and reached safety. Her actions secured her place in seafaring history.
