Attacks on Hospitals in War Zones Draw Global Condemnation

· 2 min read ·

A series of devastating attacks on medical facilities in active conflict zones has drawn sharp international condemnation, highlighting a brutal and illegal tactic of modern warfare. From Myanmar to Sudan and Ukraine, hospitals and clinics have been struck by airstrikes, drones, and shelling, killing patients, medical staff, and civilians sheltering within.

In Myanmar, military airstrikes have repeatedly hit hospitals. One such attack in the Sagaing Region killed at least 33 people, including children [24040]. Another in Rakhine State caused significant damage and casualties just before a planned national election [24258]. The European Union condemned a recent hospital attack in Myanmar as a clear violation of international humanitarian law, which grants special protection to medical facilities and personnel [23544].

Similar patterns are emerging elsewhere. In Sudan, a drone attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) struck a military hospital and nearby civilian areas, killing at least nine people according to medical groups [26370]. Sudan’s government has separately accused the RSF of a drone strike that targeted a rural hospital and a kindergarten, killing dozens of children [19970].

The conflict in Ukraine has also seen medical infrastructure come under fire. Shelling hit a medical facility in the Russian-controlled part of Kherson, killing three staff members [22565]. In a separate incident, Ukrainian police in Kherson accused Russian forces of using a drone to remotely scatter mines on the grounds of a hospital, a tactic designed to inflict casualties later and hinder movement [54629]. Russian troops have also been reported using First-Person-View (FPV) drones to remotely mine areas, including near villages, as a defensive measure [41534].

International humanitarian law, also known as the laws of war, strictly forbids attacks on hospitals and medical workers. These spaces are considered sanctuaries for the wounded and sick, regardless of which side they are on. The repeated nature of these attacks across multiple continents suggests a flagrant disregard for these established norms.

While the fighting parties often trade accusations—with Russia blaming Ukraine for strikes on civilian sites [39924] and Ukraine accusing Russia of war crimes and genocide [49873]—the destruction of healthcare infrastructure creates a universal crisis. It deprives all civilians, regardless of allegiance, of critical life-saving care, exacerbating the humanitarian toll of war.
