Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has won a seventh term in office. The electoral commission declared him the winner of the presidential election held last week.
The result was immediately rejected by his main opponent, singer-turned-politician Bobi Wine. Wine alleges widespread fraud and electoral malpractice.
The vote occurred under a nationwide internet shutdown. Authorities said this was for security, but critics call it a tactic to stifle opposition communication and protest.
Museveni, 78, has led Uganda since 1986. This new term extends his rule to over four decades. International observers have noted an environment of fear and repression around the elections.
Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has urged foreign powers not to recognize the result. He claims his party has evidence of vote-rigging.
