The drought has pushed nearly three-quarters of England and all of Wales into official drought status, with officials warning of “real trouble” for public water supplies if dry weather persists into autumn [219383]. In Germany, the Rhine—which carries about 5% of the country’s goods—is so low that barges must carry lighter loads or stop entirely, directly hitting factories and energy producers that depend on river deliveries [219285]. The situation is equally dire for farmers, with hay becoming scarce as meadows and pastures dry up, threatening livestock feed supplies [218054].

The crisis extends beyond Europe. In the Mediterranean, up to one-fifth of vital seagrass meadows could vanish by 2100 due to rising sea temperatures and more frequent marine heatwaves [219320]. These meadows, often called the “lungs of the sea,” produce oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, serve as nurseries for fish, and protect coastlines from erosion—their decline would ripple through the entire food chain, affecting local fishing and tourism [219320].
