Russia Unleashes Record 1,500-Drone Barrage on Ukraine, Strikes Near NATO Border

Russia launched its largest aerial assault of the war against Ukraine, firing over 1,500 drones in a massive two-day attack that struck civilian infrastructure across multiple cities, including the capital Kyiv and regions bordering NATO member Hungary [149493][149567][148253].

The barrage, which President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as the biggest since the war began, killed at least one person and injured 16 others in Kyiv alone [148988]. In one incident, a drone strike split a residential building in two, trapping residents under rubble [148988]. For the first time, Russian drones also hit Ukraine’s Zakarpattia Oblast, which borders Hungary, raising fresh concerns about the conflict spreading into NATO territory [148253].

Ukrainian military officials said Moscow timed the attack to coincide with former U.S. President Donald Trump’s arrival in Beijing, intending to send a message to the new U.S. administration [149493]. Ukrainian forces shot down most of the drones, but many hit civilian targets [149493][148988].

In response to the relentless aerial campaign, Ukraine is rapidly expanding its use of solar energy, as Russian strikes increasingly target nuclear facilities and the power grid [134026]. “Solar panels are small, distributed, and harder for missiles to destroy,” the new strategy emphasizes, turning renewable power into a tool for wartime survival [134026].

Meanwhile, Baltic allies stepped up practical support. Lithuania signed an agreement with Ukraine to jointly produce military drones, including long-range strike, naval, and interceptor models, and will transfer technology between companies [149495]. Latvia will host Ukrainian air defense specialists to bring combat experience to its operations [149495].

Denmark also announced a €33 million investment in a joint combat training project in Ukraine, focusing on medical care, mine clearance, and small-unit operations to improve soldier survival rates [85441].

Separately, Ukraine and the United States are preparing a landmark “drone deal” to manufacture and export unmanned aircraft worldwide [147574].
