AIDS progress fading as U.S. funding cuts hit Africa

Decades of gains in the fight against AIDS are at risk, the head of the UN’s HIV/AIDS programme warned Thursday. Donor funding is declining, and community-based health services are collapsing in some of the world’s most vulnerable countries, especially in Africa. The joint UN programme on HIV/AIDS, known as UNAIDS, said prevention and treatment services are faltering. Without immediate support, experts fear the region could see a rise in new infections and deaths.
