Pakistani troops have enforced a three-day curfew in two northern cities after violent protests killed 23 people. The unrest followed the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in reported U.S.-Israeli strikes.
Officials imposed the curfew in Gilgit and Skardu before dawn on Monday. The move came after thousands of Shiite demonstrators protested on Sunday. The protests turned violent, with crowds attacking a United Nations military office.
The targeted office belongs to the UN Military Observer Group. This group monitors the ceasefire in the disputed Kashmir region.
Authorities say tens of people were also injured in the clashes. The curfew is intended to restore order and prevent further violence.
