A remote Russian town is digging out after a historic snowstorm. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky was hit by more than 1.8 meters (6 feet) of snow last week.
Strong winds created snow drifts over 3 meters high. The snow buried cars and cut off roads and buildings, leaving people stranded.
Weather experts say two factors caused the extreme event. A strong Pacific storm pulled warm, moist air from the tropics. This air then collided with freezing Arctic air already over the Kamchatka peninsula.
