Russia Seeks to Divide the West, Weaken Support for Ukraine

· 3 min read ·

A consistent and deliberate strategy by the Kremlin to fracture Western unity is emerging as a central theme in global affairs, according to multiple security experts and officials. The primary goal of this campaign is to undermine political and military support for Ukraine by exploiting and amplifying disagreements between the United States and its European allies.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government is actively working to “export chaos” to weaken Western societies, the head of Britain’s MI6 intelligence service recently stated [26392]. This effort employs a mix of covert operations, online influence campaigns, and the exploitation of diplomatic incidents to create division. A core objective, analysts say, is to present the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the transatlantic partnership as fractured and unreliable [53874].

One prominent example cited by experts is the diplomatic crisis triggered by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s expressed interest in purchasing Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. Russian state media celebrated the feud, with one Kremlin-linked official calling it a sign of the “collapse of the transatlantic union” [53871]. Danish defense officials warned the controversy was a “big win for Putin,” as it forced Western allies to divert attention from countering Russian aggression [52004].

The strategy is not limited to seizing on spontaneous disputes. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has accused Russia of planning covert “false flag” attacks—operations designed to look like they were carried out by an enemy—with the aim of blaming Ukraine and eroding European public support for military aid [48117]. Furthermore, a report from George Washington University alleges Russia has funded a lobbying campaign in Washington, promoting a false narrative that Ukraine persecutes Christians in an attempt to turn U.S. religious conservatives against aid [31761].

U.S. intelligence assessments indicate these tactics serve a larger imperial ambition. Officials report that Putin’s ultimate goal extends beyond Ukraine to reclaiming influence over former Soviet states, making a divided West essential to his long-term plans [31282]. By encouraging internal Western fights, Russia aims to reduce the resources and political will available to support Kyiv, hoping that a distracted and arguing alliance will be less effective in countering its military campaign [17045].

Despite these efforts, Western officials maintain that support for Ukraine remains steadfast. Stoltenberg asserted that Russia’s attempt to divide NATO “has failed,” and the alliance’s commitment continues [48117]. However, the repeated pattern of Kremlin amplification of Western discord underscores a persistent and calculated threat to allied cohesion.
