Premier Li Qiang told Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that China and Canada are at a "new starting point." He urged both nations to deepen cooperation.
Li made the statement during talks in Beijing on Thursday. It was the second day of Carney's four-day state visit to China.
The Chinese premier called for the two countries to protect multilateralism and free trade together. Multilateralism is a system of cooperation between multiple nations.
"Standing at a new starting point, China is willing to work with Canada to uphold the strategic partnership," Li said. He added that they should increase political trust and respect each other's core interests.
This high-level visit is seen as an effort to improve relations. Ties between the two countries have been strained in recent years.
The meetings are expected to cover trade, climate change, and international affairs.
