Pentagon Drops the Hammer: Alibaba, BYD, Baidu Blacklisted in Massive US-China Tech Crackdown
The Pentagon has blacklisted three of China’s biggest tech giants—Alibaba, BYD, and Baidu—alongside other major firms, accusing them of ties to the Chinese military in a major escalation of the US-China tech war.
The U.S. Department of Defense updated its so-called 1260H blacklist, adding e-commerce and cloud giant Alibaba, electric vehicle and battery maker BYD, and search engine and AI leader Baidu [168944][168899]. The list also includes drug manufacturer WuXi AppTec, robot company Unitree, and electric carmaker Nio [168944]. The Pentagon identifies these companies as having links to China’s People’s Liberation Army, and while the designation does not trigger immediate bans, it blocks the firms from receiving U.S. government contracts and restricts American investment in them [168899]. The companies have denied the allegations [168899]. The annual update also removed some Chinese firms that no longer operate in the United States [168944]. This move signals heightened scrutiny and risks damaging business relationships for the targeted companies [168944].
