China’s New 435-HP SUV Costs Half as Much as a Defender
Chinese automakers have found a new trend: large, rugged-looking SUVs. These vehicles combine boxy shapes and high hoods with electrified engines and modern technology. The latest model to join this trend is the GWM Haval H7, now on sale in Spain. The H7 is a family SUV, not a hardcore off-roader. It is 4.8 meters long and seats five people. It competes with other Chinese models like the BYD Seal U and Jaecoo 8. **Design and Interior** The H7 features a tall hood, a large grille, and pronounced wheel arches. Vertical rear lights give it a distinct look compared to the rounded shapes of many modern SUVs. Inside, a 15.6-inch multimedia screen dominates the dashboard. A 12.3-inch digital instrument panel sits behind the steering wheel. The car uses the Coffee OS 3.0 operating system for connectivity. Higher trim levels include a head-up display, wireless phone charging, and front seats with heating, ventilation, and electric adjustment. Buyers can choose between two trim levels: Explore and Advance. **Five Engine Options** The H7 offers an unusually wide range of engines. The lineup includes: - A 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 215 CV and all-wheel drive. - Two self-charging hybrids with 247 CV, available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. - A plug-in hybrid with 326 CV and front-wheel drive. It offers up to 150 kilometers of electric range in the combined WLTP cycle, or 202 kilometers in city driving. - A top-tier plug-in hybrid called Hi4. It combines a combustion engine with two electric motors to produce 435 CV and all-wheel drive. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, though electric range drops to 129 kilometers. **Price and Competition** GWM has opened orders in Spain with a promotional price of 28,000 euros for the entry-level self-charging hybrid. All-wheel-drive versions start at 32,500 euros. The most affordable plug-in hybrid starts at 29,625 euros, while the 435 CV version costs 34,125 euros. These prices depend on commercial offers and financing. Plug-in hybrid prices also include a 2,250-euro advance from the Spanish government's Plan Auto+ subsidy, available to buyers who meet the requirements. The Haval H7 enters a growing market of Chinese SUVs that attract European buyers with size, equipment, electrification, and competitive prices. Its main challenge will be convincing buyers to choose it over established rivals like the Toyota Land Cruiser or Land Rover Defender, which offer similar rugged styling but usually cost much more.
