Novaya Gazeta to close: ‘Russian society is being systematically crushed’

Novaya Gazeta, one of Russia’s most well-known independent media outlets, will permanently close next month. The newspaper announced the decision after facing what it called intolerable pressure from authorities. The outlet said it had been stripped of its newsroom, its donation platforms and its legal right to publish. Its former editor-in-chief, Dmitry Muratov, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021. “This is not just our own story; it is the story of a country and a society that are being systematically crushed,” editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov wrote on the newspaper’s website.
