Brazil's Superior Electoral Court has given Meta a 24-hour deadline, expiring Tuesday, to prove its algorithms and artificial intelligence treat President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro equally. The deadline falls five days before the runoff election.
If Meta—owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp—fails to comply, the daily fine will double from 500,000 to one million reais.
The company previously extended its original 72-hour deadline to five days, citing "technical difficulties." It also submitted untranslated reports in English and provided documents taken out of context.
