Nobel Peace Prize winner Navanethem Pillay has criticized new US sanctions on judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC), calling the move "shocking."
The ICC is a permanent court in The Hague that prosecutes individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. The US sanctions target ICC judges involved in investigations of American citizens or allies.
Pillay, a former UN human rights chief and ICC judge, said the sanctions undermine the court's independence and threaten global justice efforts.
The US has not signed the ICC treaty and argues the court could unfairly target its citizens.
