Jet-powered drones pierce Ukraine's air defenses as Russia saves missiles for winter

Russia is using a new type of jet-powered drone to strike Ukraine, freeing up its missile stockpile for winter attacks on the country's power grid, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The drones, known as Gerans, fly faster than earlier models. This speed allows them to break through Ukraine's air defenses more reliably, the ISW said.
Because the drones can hit targets on their own, Russia does not need to spend as many missiles on current strikes. The ISW expects Russia to save those missiles for a winter campaign against Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
