Europe's fish stocks are in serious danger. Now, the retailers who sell seafood are telling the fishing industry to slow down.
Last week, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) published its annual mackerel report. ICES is an intergovernmental marine science organization. Its data is used to set yearly catch limits—the maximum amount of fish that can be caught.
The report follows upward trends in overfishing, a practice that threatens the long-term survival of fish populations. Retailers dependent on stable fish supplies are now urging the industry to act before stocks collapse.
