The United Nations says time is running out to restore the world's forests. These forests are vital for food security and for fighting climate change.
More than 489 million hectares (1.2 billion acres) of forest have been cleared since 1990. An even larger area has been degraded, meaning the land has lost quality and can no longer support healthy trees.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a UN agency, released the report. It urges governments to treat forest restoration as a national priority.
