At this week's United Nations General Assembly, two leaders presented sharply different visions for the world's future.
Donald Trump's speech followed a familiar pattern: false boasts, strange tangents, and dark military threats against several nations. Discussing his seven-month war with Iran, he wondered aloud whether to "annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly."
In Trump's view, the world exists to be ruled — and only by the United States. He called his country's economy "the envy of the world" and its military "the most powerful on Earth."
But another voice offered a different path. In his final UN speech, French President Emmanuel Macron showed resolve — and may have handed other leaders a valuable parting gift: the courage to stand up to Trump.
His firmness appeared to spread. Leaders of other "middle powers" seemed to take note.
The contrast was clear. One leader spoke of domination. The other spoke of standing firm.
