The United Nations Secretary-General said the Security Council remains "unjust" as long as Africa has no permanent seat on it.
He made the statement on September 23, 2026, pressing again for reform of the council, the body that holds the most power at the UN.
Africa has long demanded permanent representation on the council. The continent has 54 member states but no permanent seat.
The five permanent members — the United States, Russia, China, France, and Britain — hold veto power. Any change to the council's structure requires their approval.
The Secretary-General's comment adds weight to a debate that has stalled for years.
