Russia Election Day Chaos: 400 Drones Hit Moscow, Three Dead

Russia says it stopped its largest-ever drone attack on Moscow during the country's main parliamentary election day. At least three people died and about 20 were injured, including several children. The Russian state news agency TASS reported that around 400 drones were shot down while flying toward Moscow. At least 11 towns in the Moscow region reported damage from falling drone pieces. Moscow's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, called it "the biggest attack with enemy drones ever carried out against Moscow." He said the attack was meant to disrupt the parliamentary elections, which began Friday and end Sunday night. "The enemy failed," Sobyanin said. According to the governor of the Moscow region, Andrei Vorobyov, a man died in the hospital after his wife was killed hours earlier when a drone hit their apartment building. Their 15-year-old daughter was injured and is in the hospital. A third victim, an elderly man, also died in his home during the attack. One drone hit an oil refinery, and another struck a residential building, Sobyanin said. The attack also briefly shut down Moscow's airports. About 100 flights were canceled or delayed, and around 450 planes heading to the capital had to land in other cities. Russia's Investigative Committee opened a criminal case for a "terrorist attack" on targets in Moscow and the surrounding region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski confirmed that Ukraine struck key Russian oil industry facilities and a logistics center. "One of the key facilities of the Russian oil industry and a logistics center of the aggressor were hit. That means billions of dollars less for the war machine," he wrote on X. Zelenski said the attack used several drone systems, including the FP-1, RZ-100, MICH.2000, Palianytsia, Vendetta, Liutyi, Bars, Flamingo, and Pelican. He thanked Ukrainian soldiers and security services for their precision. He also said Ukraine hit another facility in the Voronezh region and called on Moscow to end the war. "Moscow must end its brutal war and choose peace instead of building a multi-layered air defense at the expense of other regions," he said. "What is missing is political will."
