A devastating flood swept through the China-Nepal border last month, leaving a trail of destruction and desperate families searching for information.
The disaster began as a torrent of ice, rock, mud and debris. It tore through Himalayan valleys, destroying critical infrastructure and cutting off roads and communications.
In Gyirong county, in the Tibet autonomous region, the flood struck a major border crossing. Rescue teams faced one of the most physically difficult environments imaginable.
The human toll extends beyond the immediate area. The disaster also revealed serious weaknesses in how authorities communicate during a crisis.
