Huawei Technologies on Monday unveiled its first smartphone powered by a next-generation processor built on the company’s own “Tau Scaling Law,” a move to boost chip performance without relying on advanced foreign equipment. The Kirin 9050 Pro chip, introduced at a launch event in Guangzhou, marks a step in Huawei’s effort to counter US export restrictions. Richard Yu Chengdong, chairman of Huawei’s consumer business group, called the processor the company’s “most powerful Kirin chip ever.” The new chip is based on Huawei’s proprietary architecture, which the firm says improves efficiency by adjusting how computing tasks are distributed. The Tau Scaling Law, named after the Greek letter used in physics to denote time constants, is Huawei’s internal model for predicting chip performance gains as transistor density increases—similar to Moore’s Law in the broader industry. The phone, a trifold device, is the first to use the Kirin 9050 Pro. Huawei did not disclose pricing or a specific release date beyond the launch event. The announcement continues Huawei’s strategy of designing its own silicon and working with domestic partners, as US rules limit its access to advanced chipmaking tools from companies like ASML and Applied Materials.
