Ukraine Strikes Back: Counterattack Launched to Save Donbas’ Last Free Cities

A Russian pincer movement is slowly tightening around Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, the final two major urban centers in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region still under Kyiv’s control. In response, Ukrainian forces have launched a counterattack and are rushing reinforcements to the frontline. The goal is to break the encirclement before it closes completely. Military analysts note that holding these cities is critical for Ukraine’s defensive line in the region. However, the coming winter may offer only a brief reprieve. Freezing temperatures and muddy terrain typically slow large-scale offensive operations, giving both sides time to regroup.
