China’s Solar Boom Cuts Bird Numbers in Half

A major new study reveals a hidden cost of China’s rapid solar expansion: a sharp decline in local bird diversity. Published in the journal *Science* in August 2026, the research shows that large-scale solar farms are reshaping ecosystems in ways that were previously underestimated. The study, appearing in Volume 393, Issue 6813, found that areas converted for solar power generation saw a significant drop in bird species. While solar energy is critical for reducing carbon emissions, the authors warn that poorly planned installations can harm biodiversity. According to the research, the loss is not uniform. Ground-mounted solar panels, which cover vast stretches of land, appear to disrupt habitats more than rooftop or elevated installations. Birds that rely on open ground or specific vegetation are especially vulnerable. The findings do not argue against solar power. Instead, they call for smarter site selection and design—such as leaving natural corridors between panels or integrating agriculture with solar farms. The goal, the researchers say, is to balance clean energy goals with ecological health. As China leads the world in solar capacity, this study offers a timely reminder: even green energy has an environmental footprint. The challenge is not choosing between climate action and wildlife, but learning how to do both.
