The German state of Brandenburg, which surrounds Berlin, is getting drier. At the same time, it is becoming home to some of the world’s most water-hungry industrial giants, including electric car maker Tesla and energy drink producer Red Bull. This has created a growing conflict over a simple question: is there enough water to go around? Brandenburg has faced repeated heatwaves and low rainfall in recent years. Its lakes and groundwater levels are dropping. Yet the region is also attracting major manufacturers that need massive amounts of water for production. Tesla’s nearby car factory and Red Bull’s bottling plant are among the largest consumers. Local officials and residents are now worried about the strain on the water supply. Farmers need water for crops. Towns need it for daily life. And new industries need it to operate. The competition for this limited resource is intensifying. The problem is not just about today’s weather. It is about long-term planning. If the climate continues to warm and dry out, the region may have to choose between supporting new jobs and protecting its natural water reserves. For now, there is no simple solution.
