Despite being more educated and connected than ever before, Morocco’s young people are trapped by precarious living conditions, low wages, and a cost of living that makes independence impossible.
This sense of hopelessness pushed hundreds of them into the sea at the end of July, attempting to swim to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
“No one throws their child into the water for no reason,” one local said, summing up the desperation driving the mass crossing.
For these youths, the short swim to European soil is not a reckless act, but a calculated escape from a future that offers them nothing at home.
