As global temperatures rise, the threat of heatwaves doesn’t disappear when the sun goes down. In fact, scientists warn that hot nights pose a distinct and often overlooked risk to human health, disrupting sleep and straining the body in ways that daytime heat does not.
During the day, the body sweats to cool down. But at night, if the air remains warm and humid, this natural cooling system slows. The body’s core temperature stays high, which delays the deep sleep stages needed for physical recovery and memory consolidation. For many, this means waking up tired, irritable, and less focused.
The health impact goes beyond a bad night’s rest. Repeated exposure to night-time heat can raise heart rate and blood pressure, putting extra stress on the cardiovascular system. Older adults, young children, and people with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or heart disease are especially vulnerable. Even healthy individuals may feel the effects after just one night, including reduced cognitive performance and a weaker immune response the next day.
Experts note that urban areas are particularly affected. Concrete and asphalt absorb heat during the day and release it slowly at night, creating what is known as the “urban heat island” effect. This means city residents often experience higher night-time temperatures than those in rural areas, even during the same heatwave.
Public health officials urge simple preventive measures: keep curtains closed during the day, use fans or air conditioning when possible, and drink water before bed. But they also stress that heatwaves are no longer just a daytime problem. As nights warm across the globe, sleep—and the health that depends on it—is becoming a growing casualty of climate change.
