Syria and Russia have reached an agreement to reorganize Moscow’s military presence at two key bases, according to Syria’s Foreign Ministry.
The deal covers the Hmeimim airbase and the Tartus naval port. Under the terms, civilian authorities will take over management of Hmeimim Airport and part of Tartus port.
Military facilities at both sites will be converted into joint training centers within three months.
The Foreign Ministry confirmed the move in a statement on Monday, without providing further details.
The agreement marks a significant shift in Russia’s footprint in Syria, where it has maintained a military presence since 2015.
