UAE Accuses Iran of Attacking Its Tanker Near Strait of Hormuz

The United Arab Emirates said on Saturday that Iran attacked one of its oil tankers while the vessel was passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The ship belongs to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), which is state-owned. The UAE foreign ministry issued a statement condemning what it called a “hostile Iranian attack” on the tanker. No further details about the attack or possible damage were provided. The incident comes as Iran has effectively blocked the strait, a key waterway for global oil shipments. Iran says it wants to charge ships for using the passage, a move the United States strongly opposes. At the same time, Iran is holding talks with neighboring Oman about how the strait should be managed in the future. Tehran said on Saturday that a deal with Oman on the issue is close. The strait of Hormuz is a narrow route between the Gulf and the open ocean. About one-fifth of the world’s oil passes through it, making any disruption a major concern for global energy markets.
