China’s Military Is Racing to Break America’s Island Chain. Here’s the Score.

As the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) marks its 99th anniversary on August 1, it is exactly one year from the deadline Beijing set for its centenary military goals. That deadline is not ceremonial. It signals a push to close a critical gap with the United States along the “first island chain”—a string of allied territories and bases stretching from Japan through Taiwan to the Philippines. Beijing has ordered the PLA to become a “world-class military” by mid-century. But the immediate target is more specific: to weaken or break through US-led chokepoints along that arc. These chokepoints are maritime passages and bases that Washington uses to limit Chinese naval movement into the open Pacific. The numbers explain the urgency. China is building warships, missiles, and aircraft faster than the US can replace its own aging fleet. For decades, the US relied on a quantitative edge—more ships, more sorties, more bases. That edge is shrinking. In several categories, such as surface combatants and land-based anti-ship missiles, China now holds a local advantage within the first island chain. This is not just about hardware. The PLA has reorganized its command structure to fight joint operations—air, sea, land, and cyber—under one roof. Beijing is also practicing long-range strikes and amphibious landings in drills that simulate breaking through the chain. The result is a strategic paradox. The US still has superior global reach and battle experience. But in a confined theater near China’s coast, distance favors the defender. Beijing does not need to win a global war. It only needs to make the cost of entering the first island chain prohibitive for Washington. As the centenary deadline approaches, expect more pressure on that arc—and more tests of whether US alliances can hold the line. The draft numbers are clear. The outcome is not.
