DJI Drone Maps Everest’s Deadly Icefall for 2026 Season

SHANGHAI – DJI, the world’s top maker of civilian drones, has released new survey footage of the Khumbu Icefall on Mount Everest. The footage was captured by the company’s Matrice 4E drone and processed using DJI Terra mapping software. The Khumbu Icefall is one of the most dangerous sections of the Everest climb. It is a constantly shifting glacier with deep crevasses and towering ice blocks. Mapping it accurately is critical for climbers and guides planning their route for the 2026 season. The drone survey provides high-resolution, three-dimensional data of the icefall’s current condition. This allows expedition teams to identify safe paths and avoid hazardous areas before setting foot on the ice. DJI said the technology helps reduce risk for climbers and support staff by giving them a clear, up-to-date picture of the terrain. The company did not specify when the footage was taken or how long the mapping process took.
