TOKYO – Nineteen people remain missing after a powerful earthquake caused a shopping center to collapse on the island of Kyushu in southern Japan, according to reports from TT news agency. One person has been confirmed dead so far.
“This is a major quake, especially for one occurring on land,” said Björn Lund, a seismologist at Uppsala University.
Rescue crews are searching the rubble for survivors. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
