Japan Quake Kills 18; Rescuers Search Rubble for Survivors
Soldiers and emergency workers combed through a collapsed shopping center and destroyed homes on Wednesday, searching for survivors after a powerful earthquake struck southwestern Japan. The death toll from the magnitude 7.1 quake has risen to at least 18. The earthquake hit the Kumamoto area on Kyushu, the southern main island, a day earlier. The prefectural government reported that at least 62 people were injured, six of them seriously. Officials warn the number of victims may continue to rise as rescuers dig through the rubble.
