Supernodes: The New Weapon in the US-China AI War
As artificial intelligence models grow beyond 1 trillion parameters, a new concept is reshaping the computing world: the “supernode.” A supernode is a giant supercomputer made by linking hundreds or thousands of individual chips to work as one unit. This approach allows companies to run massive AI models that a single chip cannot handle. At this year’s World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), China’s top AI summit, domestic chipmakers showcased this technology. Huawei Technologies and Biren Technology both unveiled new hardware designed to create supernodes. The focus on supernodes at WAIC signals a major shift in strategy. Instead of competing on individual chip performance, Chinese firms are now racing to master chip networking. This change could redefine the technological rivalry between China and the United States.
