Oil Tanker Explodes in Strait of Hormuz; Iran Warns Ships to Turn Back
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) reported that an oil tanker caught fire after an explosion in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday. The IRGC stated that two vessels in the area immediately reversed course. The Guard did not specify the cause of the blast, but warned that no vessel will be allowed to transit the waterway until further notice. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passage between Iran and Oman, through which about 20% of the world’s oil passes. The incident raises fresh concerns about shipping safety in one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints. No injuries or oil spills have been confirmed.
