Shares of Chinese artificial intelligence company Z.ai, also known as Zhipu, jumped 37 per cent in Hong Kong on Tuesday to close at HK$1,219 (US$155). The surge followed news that the firm had completed a massive data centre running entirely on Chinese-made chips.
The 1-gigawatt (GW) facility is an AI computing centre, a type of high-power data hub used to train and run complex AI models. Zhipu will use the centre to develop its GLM series of AI models.
The stock rebound came after a week-long decline of more than 40 per cent. According to people familiar with the matter, the data centre is already operational.
