Asia Isn’t Worried About Japan’s Military, Only China Is

China is loudly warning that Japan is returning to its old militaristic ways. But across the Asia-Pacific region, few countries are paying attention—or believe it. China’s repeated claims about a dangerous Japan are having the opposite effect. The more Beijing criticizes Tokyo, the less credible it looks. In contrast, Japan appears more reasonable. Japan’s history in the region includes a painful period of aggression. However, the current warnings from China are not gaining support from other Asian nations. For most of Asia, the fear of a remilitarized Japan is simply not there. Only China seems to be sounding the alarm.
