MarineTraffic, a global ship tracking platform, reports that at least four fully loaded oil tankers reactivated their Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) on Tuesday. The vessels had previously loaded crude oil at Iran’s Kharg Island earlier this year.
The tankers are now visible near the boundary of a maritime blockade. Their reappearance follows a recent framework deal involving the United States.
AIS is a tracking system that ships use to broadcast their location and identity. Tankers often turn off AIS to avoid detection during sanctioned oil shipments.
