Berlin – Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Germany may hold a parliamentary vote on its naval mission in the Strait of Hormuz within the next two weeks, but only if the United States and Iran finalize a peace deal.
The mission, which involves German warships patrolling the strategic waterway, currently operates under a government mandate. A parliamentary vote would seek formal approval to continue or adjust the deployment.
Merz’s statement signals a conditional approach: Berlin will only seek a mandate if a US-Iran agreement is concluded. If no deal is reached, the vote may be delayed or canceled.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, and any military mission there requires careful political backing. Germany’s decision to tie the vote to a broader diplomatic outcome underscores its cautious stance on direct military engagement in the region.
